Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
