They're Applying to America What They Performed to Christianity

The Trump movement's most illuminating and defining moments – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of a few weeks, the US president commenced revealing the public his intentions for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the eastern section to build it.

He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of fatalities due to his slashing to foreign assistance is 600,000 and rising, and this week research projected his energy policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have attempted – truly, no previous leader would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying large sections of the White House to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which maintain dealings with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the humble will receive the planet' into 'the humble will perish of cholera'

As confusing as it is to observe the chief executive attempt to overturn the old idea regarding democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment among Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations a near majority – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have observed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we grew up with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they transformed an image of love into an icon of animosity who blesses exactly the harshness that he denounced in biblical teachings; this has happened more slowly, across decades instead of months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.

A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself

So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, since in theory Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and because the quickly increasing segment within America could have minimal awareness regarding him as they consider themselves atheists or doubters or nones. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that there are pearls of great price in biblical accounts.

It is emphatically definitely not the story of a powerful ruler arising; conversely, an infant arrives to homeless parents in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to avoid covert authorities. The infant develops in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his doctrine focuses on affection for other people, specifically for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Jesus' answer to aggression is to present the additional cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a method to teach the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing states that when a person pilfers your jacket you ought to provide him your sweater also.

The evident and direct truth that the Jesus in biblical accounts advocates for a kind of extreme compassion concentrated on the needy has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a controversial faith: appealing to the masses, but because of its natural unconventionality demanding to be contained. In the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – Protestantism was so dominant that it essentially blessed current circumstances.

A Battle for the Best of Us

Hence I have become inspired to see the steadfast resistance regarding Trump emerge during the previous year. It has provided significant comfort to help build the movement that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged electorate to participate in large quantities in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, with American flags during all protests and requests to the best parts within national heritage.

We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you welcome them and embrace them or not?

The nation is most protected, essentially, by relationship to the best in US heritage, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to that which renders it distinctive and magnificent, specifically the model of Christ. In neither case does it mean pretending the most damaging regarding America and Christianity did not happen; it means both humility and belief, a mixture that serious American Christians ought to accept.
